Visitation is a coming-of-age novel set in Dundee during the early 1980s, weaving together post-punk culture, convent school life, adolescence, and an underlying sense of mystery. The project involved developing both the visual identity for the book and a long-term marketing strategy designed to build anticipation ahead of publication.

Rather than focusing on traditional book promotion, the strategy centred on creating an atmosphere around the story. Drawing inspiration from the novel’s themes of memory, faith, rebellion, and uncertainty, a series of visual narratives were developed to gradually introduce readers to the world of the book. Archival imagery, fragmented storytelling, symbolic references, and mood-driven content were used to create intrigue while preserving the ambiguity at the heart of the narrative.

The visual direction explored the contrast between religious iconography and post-punk culture, balancing restraint with tension. Colour, typography, and imagery were carefully considered to evoke the emotional landscape of the novel while allowing space for interpretation. Each piece of content became part of a wider narrative, encouraging audiences to engage with the atmosphere of the story before encountering the book itself.

Alongside the marketing campaign, the cover design was developed as an extension of this world. Rather than illustrating a specific scene, the cover sought to capture the feeling of the novel, translating its themes into a visual form that felt evocative, layered, and open to interpretation.

The result was a cohesive visual identity that extended beyond the book itself, transforming the launch into an immersive storytelling experience and creating a distinct presence long before publication.
